Takṣaka said: "O Kāśyapa! If you can cure any creature that has been bitten by me, revive this tree once I have bitten it.
तक्षक ने कहा: "हे कश्यप! यदि आप मेरे द्वारा काटे गए किसी भी प्राणी को ठीक कर सकते हैं, तो इस पेड़ को मेरे द्वारा काटे जाने के बाद पुनर्जीवित कर दें।
O best of the Brāhmana-s! I will set on fire this fig tree before your very eyes. Try your best and show me the power of the mantra-s that you have spoken of."
हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ! मैं तुम्हारे देखते ही इस अंजीर के पेड़ में आग लगा दूंगा। अपना सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रयास करें और मुझे उस मंत्र की शक्ति दिखाएं जिसके बारे में आपने बात की है।"
Kāśyapa said: "O king of snakes! If that is what you wish, bite the tree. O snake! I shall revive it, once it has been bitten by you."
कश्यप ने कहा: "हे साँपों के राजा! यदि तुम यही चाहते हो, तो पेड़ को काट लो। हे साँप! तुम्हारे द्वारा काटे जाने के बाद मैं इसे पुनर्जीवित कर दूंगा।"
Sauti said: Thus addressed by the great-souled Kāśyapa, the king of snakes, supreme among snakes, went and bit the fig tree.
सौती ने कहा: महामहिम कश्यप द्वारा इस प्रकार कहे जाने पर, साँपों के राजा, साँपों में श्रेष्ठ, गए और अंजीर के पेड़ को काट लिया।
Bitten by the great-souled snake, the tree imbibed the poison and flared up all around.
महाबली सर्प द्वारा काटे जाने पर वृक्ष ने जहर पी लिया और चारों ओर भड़क उठा।
When he had burnt the tree down, the snake again spoke to Kāśyapa. "O best of the Brāhmana-s! Try your best and give life to this lord of the forest."
जब उसने पेड़ को जला दिया, तो साँप ने फिर कश्यप से बात की। "हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ! अपना सर्वश्रेष्ठ प्रयास करें और इस जंगल के स्वामी को जीवन प्रदान करें।"
The tree had been reduced to ashes from the energy of the king of the snakes. But picking up the ashes, Kāśyapa uttered these words.
साँपों के राजा की ऊर्जा से पेड़ जलकर राख हो गया था। लेकिन राख उठाते हुए कश्यप ने ये शब्द कहे।
"O king of snakes! Today you will witness the power of my knowledge. O snake! I will revive this lord of the forest in your very presence."
"हे साँपों के राजा! आज तुम मेरे ज्ञान की शक्ति को देखोगे। हे साँप! मैं तुम्हारी उपस्थिति में इस जंगल के स्वामी को पुनर्जीवित करूँगा।"
Then the illustrious and learned Kāśyapa, supreme among Brāhmana-s, revived through his learning the tree that had been reduced to a heap of ashes.
तब ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ, प्रतिष्ठित और विद्वान कश्यप ने अपनी विद्या से उस वृक्ष को पुनर्जीवित किया जो राख के ढेर में बदल गया था।

अङ्कुरं तं स कृतवांस्ततः पर्णद्वयान्वितम् पलाशिनं शाखिनं च तथा विटपिनं पुनः
First, he created a sapling. Then he created two leaves in it. Then he created twigs and branches. Then he regener ated the entire tree.
सबसे पहले उन्होंने एक पौधा बनाया। फिर उसने उसमें दो पत्तियाँ बनाईं। फिर उसने टहनियाँ और शाखाएँ बनाईं। फिर उसने पुनः पूरे पेड़ को खा लिया।
On seeing that the tree had really been revived by the great-souled Kāśyapa, Takṣaka said, "O Brāhmaṇa! It is wonderful that you can destroy my poison or that of others like me.
यह देखकर कि वृक्ष को वास्तव में महान आत्मा वाले कश्यप द्वारा पुनर्जीवित किया गया था, तक्षक ने कहा, "हे ब्राह्मण! यह अद्भुत है कि आप मेरे या मेरे जैसे दूसरों के जहर को नष्ट कर सकते हैं।

O king of the Brāhmana-s! O you who are blessed with the power of austerities! Driven by what desire are you going there?
हे ब्राह्मण राजा! हे तपस्या की शक्ति से संपन्न! आप किस इच्छा से प्रेरित होकर वहां जा रहे हैं?
I will give you whatever fruits you hope to gain from that best of kings, however difficult they may prove to get.
मैं तुम्हें उस सर्वश्रेष्ठ राजा से जो भी फल प्राप्त करने की आशा करता हूं वह दूंगा, भले ही वह फल प्राप्त करना कितना भी कठिन क्यों न हो।

विप्रशापाभिभूते च क्षीणायुषि नराधिपे घटमानस्य ते विप्र सिद्धिः संशयिता भवेत्
O Brāhmaṇa! Your success is uncertain, because that king has been afflicted with a Brāhmaṇa's curse. His life has been shortened.
हे ब्राह्मण! आपकी सफलता अनिश्चित है, क्योंकि वह राजा एक ब्राह्मण के शाप से पीड़ित हो गया है। उनका जीवन छोटा हो गया है.
Your blazing fame, that is famous throughout the three worlds, will disappear, like the sun robbed of his splendour."
आपकी चमकती हुई कीर्ति, जो तीनों लोकों में प्रसिद्ध है, उसी प्रकार लुप्त हो जाएगी जैसे सूर्य का तेज छिन गया हो।''
Kāśyapa replied: "O snake! I am going there for riches. O best of the snakes! Give it to me and I will return home."
कश्यप ने उत्तर दिया: "हे साँप! मैं धन के लिए वहाँ जा रहा हूँ। हे साँपों में श्रेष्ठ! इसे मुझे दे दो और मैं घर लौट आऊँगा।"
Takṣaka said: "O best of the Brāhmana-s! I will today give you more riches than you hope to get from the king. Therefore, return."
तक्षक ने कहा: "हे ब्राह्मणश्रेष्ठ! मैं आज तुम्हें राजा से मिलने वाली आशा से अधिक धन दूँगा। इसलिए, लौट जाओ।"
Sauti said: Having heard what Takṣaka had said, Kāśyapa, supreme among Brāhmana-s, intelligent and with great energy, meditated on the king.
सौति ने कहा: तक्षक ने जो कहा था उसे सुनकर, ब्राह्मणों में श्रेष्ठ, बुद्धिमान और महान ऊर्जा वाले कश्यप ने राजा का ध्यान किया।
The powerful Kāśyapa then learnt through his divine knowledge that the life of the Pāṇḍava king had indeed been shortened. He returned, receiving from Takṣaka all the riches that he wanted to possess.
तब शक्तिशाली कश्यप को अपने दिव्य ज्ञान से पता चला कि पांडव राजा का जीवन वास्तव में छोटा हो गया था। वह तक्षक से वह सारी संपत्ति प्राप्त करके लौटा, जिसे वह अपने पास रखना चाहता था।
At the great-souled Kāśyapa's departure, Takṣaka hastened towards Hāstinapura.
महान आत्मा वाले कश्यप के प्रस्थान पर, तक्षक तेजी से हस्तिनापुर की ओर चला गया।
On his way, Takṣaka heard that the lord of the earth was leading a careful life, protected by mantra-s and herbs that cured poison.
रास्ते में, तक्षक ने सुना कि पृथ्वी के स्वामी मंत्रों और जहर को ठीक करने वाली जड़ी-बूटियों द्वारा संरक्षित होकर एक सावधान जीवन जी रहे थे।
At that, the snake thought to himself, "The king must be deceived through my powers of māyā. But what is the best way?"
उस पर, साँप ने मन में सोचा, "राजा को मेरी माया की शक्तियों से धोखा दिया गया होगा। लेकिन सबसे अच्छा तरीका क्या है?"
In the disguise of ascetics, Takṣaka sent some snakes to the king, with fruits, leaves and water as presents.
तपस्वियों के भेष में तक्षक ने राजा के पास फल, पत्ते और जल उपहार के रूप में कुछ साँप भेजे।
Takṣaka said: "Go swiftly to the king, as if you have a rite to perform. Make the king a present of the fruits, leaves and water."
तक्षक ने कहा: "तेजी से राजा के पास जाओ, जैसे कि तुम्हें कोई अनुष्ठान करना है। राजा को फल, पत्ते और पानी का उपहार दो।"

Sauti said: Thus commanded by Takṣaka, the snakes did this and took dārbha gras-s, water and fruits to the king.
सौती ने कहा: तक्षक की आज्ञा के अनुसार, साँपों ने वैसा ही किया और दर्भ ग्रास, जल और फल राजा के पास ले गए।

The valorous king of kings accepted their presents. When their rites were performed, he gave them leave to depart.
राजाओं के वीर राजा ने उनके उपहार स्वीकार किये। जब उनका संस्कार किया गया, तो उन्होंने उन्हें प्रस्थान करने की छुट्टी दे दी।
When those snakes disguised as ascetics had left, the king addressed his advisers and well-wishers.
जब तपस्वियों के वेश में वे साँप चले गए, तो राजा ने अपने सलाहकारों और शुभचिंतकों को संबोधित किया।
O Śaunaka! As the king was about to eat the fruit with his ministers, a small worm appeared in the fruit that he had picked up. It was tiny, with black eyes, and had the colour of copper.
हे शौनक! जैसे ही राजा अपने मंत्रियों के साथ फल खाने वाला था, तो जो फल उसने उठाया था उसमें एक छोटा सा कीड़ा दिखाई दिया। वह छोटा था, उसकी आंखें काली थीं और उसका रंग तांबे जैसा था।

Picking it up, the best of kings told his advisers, "The sun is setting. Today, I no longer have any fear from poison.

सत्यवागस्तु स मुनिः कृमिको मां दशत्वयम् तक्षको नाम भूत्वा वै तथा परिहृतं भवेत्
Therefore, let this worm become Takṣaka and bite me. Let the words of the hermit become true and let a falsehood not be committed."
अत: यह कीड़ा तक्षक बन कर मुझे डस ले। साधु की बात सत्य हो जाये, झूठ न हो जाये।”

ते चैनमन्ववर्तन्त मन्त्रिणः कालचोदिताः एवमुक्त्वा स राजेन्द्रो ग्रीवायां संनिवेश्य ह कृमिकं प्राहसत्तूर्णं मुमूर्षुर्नष्टचेतनः
Driven by destiny, the advisers applauded him. Having said this, the king of kings smilingly placed the small worm on his throat, about to die and robbed of his senses.
नियति से प्रेरित होकर, सलाहकारों ने उसकी सराहना की। इतना कहकर राजाओं के राजा ने मुस्कुराते हुए मरने को तत्पर उस छोटे से कीड़े को अपने गले में रख लिया और अपनी इंद्रियां छीन लीं।

He was still laughing when Takṣaka, who had come out of the fruit that had been given to the king, coiled around him.
